Plant of the Month for November is Mahonia. Easy to grow, thrives in sun and shade, grows in a wide range of soil conditions. Relatively pest free. Mahonias are generally quite tall and best suited at the back of beds and borders. Mahonias will come into flower some time from November through to March. Pruning is not usually necessary. Mahonias make an effective intruder deterrent with their spiky foliage. After flowering they produce blue-black berries and these berries can be used in wine making. Mahonias produce bright yellow, faintly scented flowers that appear above long, evergreen, pinnate leaves.
