November 2011 Plant of the Month and Forthcoming Events
Welcome to the update for December 2011 ...

Plant of the Month for December is Coruns.  It is hardy and reliabel.  They bthrive in moisture retentive soil and damp sites.  They are great value and have attractive features throughout the year.

Some interesting facts about Cornus!:- Cornus cultivars will provide a show bthroughout the year with green or gold variegated foliage which displays autumn colour before falling off to reveal shiny bringht red, green or golden stems throughout the winter months.  Varieties such as Cornus alba Elegantissimas and Westonbrit are vigorous upright deciduous shrubs, commonly known as dogwoods.  The origin of this name appears to be derived from the old English 'dogwood', strong stems were often used to make small daggers, skewers and cattle prods!

Tips:- Cornus can be planted in full sun or in partial shade in fertile soil.  When planting dig in plenty of organic matter.  The bright colours of the stems will gradually be lost as the stems age. It is important to encourage fresh basal shoots each year. This is achieved by pruning the whole shrub back to within 15cm (6 inches) of ground level in February or March, before the new growth starts.
